The United States Medical Licensing Examination

USMLE FORMAT INFROMATION

The USMLE, United States Medical Licensing Examination, is a medical examination provided by the National Board of Medical Examiners and the Federation of State Medical Boards which is a mandatory requirement in order to practice medicine in the United States. The USMLE is a multi-step examination, specifically 3 steps. All 3 of these steps must be passed. Step 1 specifically is usually done prior to applying to a residency program in the United States, and therefore thought of as the most important exam of the 3 to score the highest possible. However, all 3 steps are required to be passed prior to being able to apply for medical licensing. To be licensed in the United States as a medical doctor, you must have passed all 3 steps (exceptions do exist for Canadian Medical Graduates who have passed both MCCQE examinations, but this varies from state to state).
