USMLE Step 3
USMLE Step 3 is the last step of the USMLE series and practice examinations, with the exception of the final licensing medical examination for specialists. USMLE Step 3, similar to USMLE Step 2, assesses a medical school graduates ability to apply medical information, skills, practices and experiences to the clinical environment and patient encounters, however, requirements for unsupervised medical practice.
When to take the USMLE Step 3?
Most medical graduates from the United States Medical Schools, usually take the USMLE Step 3 at the end of their first year of residency.
USMLE Step 3 Format
USMLE Step 3 is a medical examination that covers a total of two days. Both days have 1 hour available for a break in the middle. On the initial day, there are 7 blocks to complete within an hour each, each consisting of a total of 48 questions for a total of 336 questions, all multiple-choice format. You are given eight hours to complete the examination.
On the second day, there are two parts. In the first part, there are 4 blocks of 36 multiple choice questions, for a total of 144 questions. However, these multiple choice question blocks must be completed in 45 minutes, for a total of 3 hours for the entire setion.
On the second part, there are 9 Clinical Case Situations, that are computer interaction scenarions, where one manages a patient electronically, by ordering tests and investigations, as well as medications and treatments. The computer-generated patient thereafter responses to your management plans and there medical condition changes. There are 25 minutes allocated per Clinical Case Situation.
